Photon Gen 2: The Ultimate Evolution of Mid-Drive Motors – Power, Reliability, and Intelligent Engineering
At CYC Motor, we have always believed in pushing the boundaries of electric bike performance. With the launch of Photon Gen. 2, we have taken all the lessons from the first generation and created a system that is even more powerful, reliable, and easier to service – while maintaining the flexibility and open ecosystem that our community loves.
Whether you’re an experienced e-bike builder or just starting your journey with mid-drive conversions, Photon Gen. 2 offers groundbreaking improvements that make it the most advanced and user-friendly system we’ve ever created. Let’s dive into the details.
Upgraded Motor: More Torque, Better Cooling, Smoother Operation
The heart of any mid-drive system is the motor – Photon Gen. 2 introduces a completely redesigned inrunner motor, replacing the outrunner design from Gen. 1. Why this change?
- Higher efficiency and better cooling – The Gen. 1 outrunner motor was compact but struggled with heat dissipation. The inrunner design in Gen. 2, combined with custom flat-wire windings, increases winding density, resulting in higher efficiency and torque.
- New temperature management – The entire motor core is impregnated with thermally conductive resin, ensuring even heat dissipation and quieter operation. Better cooling under load is perfect for off-road riding and heavy cargo bikes.
- Improved gear reduction – The optimized gearing ensures smoother power delivery and maximum torque where it’s needed most.
One-Way Clutch: Resistant to Extreme Loads
One of the most common issues with Gen. 1 was the one-way clutch, especially for heavier riders and tough terrain. In Gen. 2, it wasn’t just improved – it was practically redesigned:
- Triple torque resistance – The clutch has grown from 12×20 mm to an impressive 20×28 mm, significantly increasing durability.
- Reinforced first-stage shaft – The keyway groove and reinforcing sleeve increase resistance to forces resulting from higher reduction gearing.
- Built for reliability – Whether climbing steep hills or tackling rough trails, the new clutch is designed to last for years.
Drive Unit: Easier Service, No Specialist Tools Needed
Gen. 1 was solid, but servicing it required patience and specialized tools. Gen. 2 has radically simplified maintenance:
- Tool-free access – The entire drive unit can be opened by unscrewing just four M5 bolts – no more struggling with glued controllers.
- Quick chainring removal – The redesigned chainring adapter uses radial screws, preventing over-tightening and making removal easier.
- Modular repairs – The controller, torque sensor, motor, and first-stage gear are now easily replaceable – no special tools required.
Compatibility with Chainrings: More Options, No Compromises
At CYC Motor, they understand how important customization is, which is why they maintained backward compatibility with Gen. 1 chainrings and expanded the options:
- Standard 36T–50T chainrings provide an ideal 52 mm chainline for most mountain bikes.
- New 32T and 34T options have a 7 mm offset, improving compatibility with compact drivetrains.
CANBUS: Faster, More Reliable, Still Open
Electronics play a huge role in e-bike performance – Gen. 2 makes a big leap forward with CANBUS communication.
- Higher data throughput – Performance data is more accurate and responsive in real-time.
- Better resistance to interference – More stable connection than UART, fewer issues with interference.
- Open ecosystem – Unlike many brands, CYC Motor does not lock users into proprietary batteries. Photon Gen. 2 supports battery packs up to 72V, providing maximum flexibility.
Wiring and Connectors: No More Frustration
Details make a difference, especially when it comes to cables.
- Asymmetric connectors – No more misaligned pins – they only fit one way.
- New harness – Cleaner and stronger connections lead to fewer electrical problems.
Intuition Display: Smarter and Safer Riding
Photon Gen. 2 introduces two new display variants.
- SW102T – An improved version of the classic, now with a color screen and a refreshed interface.
- Intuition Display (New!) – A 2.1” HD LCD screen with features:
- Heart rate monitoring
- “Find My Bike” anti-theft feature
- Training mode
- 36V–72V compatibility
